Thursday's Bizarre International News

Reuters reports that police in Papua New Guinea have arrested 320 people for practicing sorcery in a so-called "cargo cult." According to the article:
Cargo cults believe that Western goods or cargo, first encountered through missionaries and explorers, are created by ancestral spirits. They have been known to build airstrips in the jungles in the belief that planes would land with cargo.
I thought everyone hated the West nowadays. It turns out some still think we're gods.

This is actually a quite sad example of how the "West" has screwed up the life of indigenous people. OTOH, it was not entirely gratuitous, but prompted by acts of war. Who knows how otherwise the screwing-up would have happened. I'm almost sure it would have.
